Rachid Deriche, director of research and head of the project team "Athena" from Research Center Inria Sophia Antipolis - Méditerranée, has received the title of Honorary Doctor (honoris causa) from the University of Sherbrooke. The title was awarded at the academic certificates conferment ceremony held on September 20 at the University of Sherbrooke.
Rachid Deriche, of Algerian origin, obtained his engineering of the "Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications (ENST) Paris" in 1979 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University Paris-IX-Dauphine in 1982. Then, he devoted himself to study of computer vision, specifically in digital processing and mathematical analysis of the images, and the 3D perception. Over the years, science plays a major role in the development of theoretical foundations of computer vision, propelling him to the rank of international authority.
For some years he worked as a researcher second and first class within the Inria institute, before being promoted to director of first-class research and more recently to the highest rank of the Directors, the Class exceptional.
Among his most notable accomplishments, is the publication of nearly 300 scientific papers, support for the creation of a special effects company for film, Realviz, and the development of a filter used in most software image processing such as Photoshop.
In 2003, Rachid Deriche reoriented its research to neuroimaging. Again, the work of this visionary become a reference for researchers in this new field, who use it to power their research. To highlight the excellence of his scientific contributions, the Academy of Sciences awarded him the "Grand Prix EADS Informatics" in 2013.
Professor Deriche, in addition to having framed a whole generation of students, he has a significantly activity of consultant and serves on several scientific advisory and administration of research institutions, as well as the editorial boards of several journals. Beyond his outstanding scientific reputation, he is also known for its undeniable human qualities: its easy and friendly approach and his ability to listen and dialogue, make it a most pleasant fellow to be around.
