ReScience : a new scientific journal to redo Science!

The reproducibility of experiments and observations is the very basis of the scientific approach, and the computational sciences are not an exception. Indeed, code should also be reproducible, which means that codes from original works must be accessible and functional. This is, however, far from being the case - as Nicolas Rougier, a researcher with the MNEMOSYNE project team, recently observed. 

Faced with the impossibility of exploiting some existing models and only being able to contact the author of certain articles, the researcher has no other option than to rewrite the code. In order to make this rewriting available to all and share these replications with the scientific community, in September 2015 Nicolas Rougier and Konrad Hinsen (researcher at the Centre for Molecular Biophysics in Orléans) created ReScience , a scientific journal that is available in open access from GitHub. The aim of this worldwide and easy-to-access platform is to enable everyone to submit replications in the computational sciences (data analysis or modelling) and to participate in (public) reviews, regardless of the field of application concerned. Eight papers have already been published, in the neurosciences, biology, physics and ecology.

This scientific journal was created at the same time as Inria developed Software Heritage which - for its part - enables the preservation of software product source codes. The two projects are complementary: indeed Software Heritage, launched in 2016, aims to collect, organise, preserve and make accessible to everyone the source code of all available software, whilst ReScience offers to replicate - in order to make them available to all - codes produced in the context of research work. The objective is the same: to make things available, and for the fields of application to be complementary.
