Damien Woods ( TAPDANCE) : Building computers out of DNA

Our team designs and builds molecular computers consisting of synthetic DNA strands that bump into each other and interact to run algorithms like sorting numbers, simulating Turing machines or other 
complicated nanoscale tasks. These DNA computers consist of DNA strands in water with a pinch of salt, and do not need poorly-understood biological machinery like cells and proteins.

The talk will highlight some of our recent theoretical and experimental results. Theoretical work is concerned with characterising the expressiveness of mathematical models of molecular computation: 
What functions can molecular computers implement? How powerful and expressive are different models relative to each other? Practice is concerned implementing DNA computers in the wet-lab; the talk 
will describe how we use self-assembly to implement Boolean circuits.
