On 23 May 2017, Absise, the Social Landlords Association of Isère, and Inria Grenoble Rhône-Alpes are holding a day of meetings between researchers, social landlords and start-ups on the topic of "Smart homes and innovation in social housing". The aim: to create new synergies between the worlds of research, innovation and social housing in order to develop the social housing of the future: connected, smart, energy-efficient and adapted to consumer needs.

Social housing has a long tradition of innovation: it is often ahead of its time in terms of architecture, the energy efficiency of its buildings (the social housing stock uses 30% less than private housing), the use of renewable energies (the first solar panels were installed on social housing in Isère), the involvement of residents in decision making, and even the consideration of the needs of specific populations and new ways of living.

To maintain its role in the local innovation ecosystem, Absise, the Social Landlords Association of Isère, aims to develop new collaborative projects with research and innovation (universities, start-ups, etc.) to plan and build the social housing of the future.

For Stéphane Duport-Rosand, chairman of Absise: "The social housing of the future presents three main challenges: pursuing energy transition, adapting to all kinds of population and to contemporary lifestyles, and improving the way health issues are dealt with in housing ."

Together with Amiqual4Home, a unique platform that designs and prototypes the connected services and objects that will equip the smart homes of the future, Inria is carrying out research and experiments to simplify daily life, promote wellbeing and keep dependent people in their own homes, monitor and control energy expenditure and protect the private lives of connected residents.

Attended by more than 200 people, the "Smart homes and innovation in social housing" event, held on Tuesday 23 May at Inria's Montbonnot offices, aims to bring together landlords, industrialists and researchers for a day of discussions and planning, imagining the role digital technology and connected objects could play in improving quality of life and controlling costs.

This event is part of National Social Housing Week, a civic event organised every year throughout France by the Social Housing Movement.
