Enhancing sporting performance using analysis and simulation
The MimeTIC project-team at the Inria Rennes-Bretagne Atlantique research centre stands at the interface between two laboratories: the 'Movement, Sport and Health' laboratory in the science and technique of physical and sports activities, and the Institute for Research in Computer Science and Random Systems (Irisa) in IT. Its research activities focus on three main areas. MimeTIC Manager Franck Multon gives us the low-down.

Optimizing Tennis Serve
Biomechanical analysis of high-level athletes can help not only to enhance their performance but also to prevent injuries. In Rennes, Brittany, France, members of the MimeTIC research team have started a partnership with the French Tennis Federation with aim of improving service technique among young hopefuls.

Six-Finger Illusion
Is it possible to create the illusion that our right hand has six fingers? More generally, can we believe in structural changes to our bodies in a virtual reality environment? What mechanisms do we use to adopt our virtual body or avatar? If our virtual avatar is different to our real self, how do we perceive the differences and how can they influence our self-perception and behaviour? The Hybrid and MimeTIC teams at the INRIA Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique research centre set up a new experimental platform to examine these questions.

Inria Previz Tech Transferred to French SolidAnim
A Paris-based company specializing in motion capture and 3D animation for the film industry, SolidAnim recently acquired an Inria technology that will enable directors to previsualize their work and pick between a variety of visual options before shooting the real movie. As scientist Marc Christie explains, in the wake of this successful transfer, both partners are now contemplating joint R&D work.

LabCom Cineviz : SolidAnim & MimeTIC team-project
The goal of this joint laboratory named Cineviz is to propose the Film industry a set of new previzualisation tools that ease the creation of cinematographic sequences in virtual environments before the shooting (previzualisation stage or previs), and prepare the technical implementation of these sequences during the shooting (technical vizualisation stage or techvis).

Perfecting shooting in basketball
For the past fifteen years or so, scientists have combined biomechanical analysis and virtual reality in an attempt to study sporting skills and to design new training tools geared towards improving player performance. In Rennes, this is one of the specialist areas of the Mouvement Sport Santé (M2S) laboratory, whose Inria team MimeTIC have entered into a collaboration with the Institut des Sciences du Mouvement Etienne-Jules Marey (UMR 7287), based in Marseille. The goal is to develop a viable market-ready tool for perfecting shooting in basketball. It is worth noting that this project is jointly funded by Inria and STAR, both members of the Instituts Carnot network.
