Isabelle Herlin, Director of the Inria Lille-Nord Europe Center, was made a Knight of the Order of Merit (Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite) in November 2017.
A Research Director since 1996, Isabelle Herlin has successively set up two Inria research teams. From 1995 to 2005, for the Air project-team, she led and managed work on satellite image processing with topics such as farming and deforestation. Then, from 2005 to 2016, she led the Clime project-team, devoted to studying interactions between data and numerical forecast models, with, for example, applications to air quality, oceanography, meteorology, and photovoltaic generation. She thus co-ordinates the Inria Innovation Lab Rain Nowcast, with the company Weather Measures, on the problem of rain nowcasting for farmers, and on flash-flood risk management. Isabelle Herlin is also a member of the scientific board of Andra and is on the higher council for strategic training and research ( CSFRS ).
Director of the Inria Lille – Nord Europe Center since 1st March 2017, Isabelle Herlin, accompanied by the science delegate, Christophe Biernacki, and the administration delegate of the center, Ludivine Deloux, is leading a new strategy for science and for regional development. Strong ties are being forged with the surrounding ecosystem, in particular in the context of the new University of Lille (after a merger of the existing universities) and of the ULNE I-Site. The development of the center is being accompanied by a location (by the end of 2018) on the EuraTechnologies site of excellence, which is the hub of the region's French Tech ecosystem. Reinforcing the center's positioning on the international stage and making it a place of well-being, based on teamwork, are the main missions that Antoine Petit set Isabelle Herlin when she was appointed. This strategy for developing the center has been taken on board by all of the members of the management team, by the heads of the project-teams, and more generally by all of the members of the center.
