Sustainability transition, environment, economy and local policy
STEEP is an interdisciplinary research team devoted to systemic modelling and simulation of the interactions between the environmental, economic and social factors within the context of transition to sustainability at local (sub-national) scales. Our goal is to develop decision-making tools to support decision makers in the implementation of this transition by developing simulation, optimization and visualization softwares. In other words, our objective is to set up some mathematical and computational tools allowing to provide some parts of an answer top the challenges how to operate the sustainable development at local scales? and which local governance for the environmental public policies ?.
The objective of the STEEP team is to develop quantitative tools for decision aiding which allow to implement sustainable policies at local scales.
- Quantitative aspects are important because, de facto, one manages only what one is able to quantify (in particular in the context of public policies). Whatever is not quantified is more or less deliberately ignored. In other respects, a quantitative inventory of what there is and what happens in a specific area constitutes the foundation of any regional study and analysis.
- Decision-help: it is very important to integrate the whole decision process from the scientific expertise to the decision itself. This is essential for three different reasons 1) ensuring that the designed models address the most relevant issues in terms of sustainability; 2) developing tools have a real impact, and 3) accelerating the effective use of these tools by territorial decision makers or decision-help agencies.
- The focus on local scales has been chosen not only because of the relevance of these decision levels, but also because they are relatively less studied in modeling exercises.
In particular, we work on two connected and complementary strategies for analyzing environmental pressures: a sectorial approach and a spatial one.
The first one is more directly connected to ecological accounting (MFA, SFA, intput-output models,...), the second one has more direct relations to urban economy (LUTI) and land cover modelling (LUCC).
