The EVA team reinvents the Smart Marina

The goal of the SmartMarina project is to use Internet of Things technology to monitor boat mooring occupancy and water/electricity use in the of Cap d'Agde marina, one of the three largest marinas in Europe.

Using Statistics to Pierce the Mysteries of the Brain

Nearly 100,000 billion neurons, each typically having 10,000 synapses and an almost infinite number of possible connections: grey matter is, in itself, a formidable mathematical object. At theInstitut du cerveau et de la moelle épinière(the Brain and Spinal Cord Institute),the researchers of the Aramis project team, using statistics and image analysis, work with doctors to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of pathologies such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Marie Doumic-Jauffret: modelling amyloidosis

Marie Doumic-Jauffret is one of 4 Inria candidates selected in the young researcher category for the ERC European call for projects 2012. Her project, called Skipper, aims to improve understanding of amyloidosis, a group of diseases that includes prions and Alzheimer’s, in order to help biologists identify therapeutic solutions.

Jean Ponce: from photo to video

A renowned specialist in shape recognition in photos, Jean Ponce, professor at France's École Normale Supérieure, moved into the field of video a few years ago. To support his work he recently received an ERC advanced grant. His goal is to automatically analyse and process films no matter what sequences or camera movements they contain, in order to archive, modify or restore them. This work is of particular interest to video effects designers.

Karthik Bhargavan: proving the safety of web applications

The medical saying "prevention is better than cure" also applies to computers. Karthik Bhargavan, a young researcher from the MOSCOVA team, recently received an ERC grant to continue his work on ensuring the safety of services such as personal and sensitive data management. This work is both theoretical and highly applied, and is carried out at the Inria and Microsoft Research joint laboratory. We went to meet this researcher.
