As part of the AI for Humanity Plan, Inria was commissioned to coordinate the research component of the national AI program. Bruno Sportisse has just appointed Bertrand Braunschweig as director of this mission.
The Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Frédérique Vidal, and the Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, Mounir Mahjoubi, have just presented, during a visit to Toulouse on 27 November 2018, the details of the IA Plan for Humanity. In particular, they confirmed that the coordination of the research component is entrusted to Inria.
Bertrand Braunschweig, current director of the Inria Saclay - Ile de France research centre, has been appointed director of the coordination mission of the national AI research programme by Bruno Sportisse, Inria's CEO. In collaboration with other research organizations, universities and the French scientific community at large, Bertrand Braunschweig will be in charge of coordinating the implementation and monitoring of research support mechanisms as part of the national plan dedicated to AI. To begin with, he will be responsible for creating a network of actors dedicated to AI, first and foremost the future 3IA (Interdisciplinary Institutes of Artificial Intelligence), anchored in the university centres.
Bertrand Braunschweig's knowledge of the AI ecosystem will be one of the key elements for the successful implementation of the AI Plan. The role given to Inria, in support of public policies, is both a recognition of our place in the digital world and a real challenge for the institute, which is fully committed.
Bruno Sportisse, CEO and Chairman Inria
With this appointment, Bertrand Braunschweig will leave the management of the Inria Saclay - Ile de France research centre. However, he will remain a member of the Management Team and will report directly to the Chairman and CEO.
