The results of the 3IA (Interdisciplinary Institute of Artificial Intelligence) call for expressions of interest were made public on 6 November 2018 by Frédérique Vidal, French Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and Mounir Mahjoubi, French Secretary of State for Digital Affairs. The projects of the Grenoble (MIAI@Grenoble-Alpes), Nice (3IA Côte d'Azur), Paris (PRAIRIE) and Toulouse (ANITI) sites have been selected. Inria participates in three of the four successful projects.
Christophe Gourdin is a research and development engineer within the Inria Lille - Nord Europe center’s Spirals* project team. These last months, he has swapped his developer hat for that of a start-up project leader. XScalibur is expected to be launched in January 2019. It will offer businesses an innovative multi-cloud management platform.
European Research Council 2018
The Extreme-scale Mathematically-based Computational Chemistry (EMC2) project led by Eric Cancès, Laura Grigori, Yvon Maday and Jean-Philip Piquemal has won an ERC Synergy Grant in the context of the 2018 call for projects, and is one of the 27 winners announced on Tuesday, October 23 2018. The four EMC2 principal investigators explain the challenges of this very high-level research project.

Science for all
This Saturday, October 20, was held for its eighth edition, the Journée Science et Musique, at Le Diapason on the Beaulieu campus in Rennes. More than 500 visitors came to this closing event of the Festival des Sciences. Alone or with the family or even with the 3 generations gathered together, simple curious people or confirmed musicians, passionate about Science, high school students or students in search of knowledge, all came to meet Inria and IRISA researchers to discover the interactions of Digital and Music.
Transfer & innovation
On 18 October 2018, on the occasion of the 'Rendez-vous Carnot' meetings, the Federation of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Industries (FIEEC) presented the FIEEC Applied Research awards. This year, the second prize was awarded to Adrien Loseille, researcher within the Gamma3 team, for his work on adaptive meshing in collaboration with the SME LEMMA.

We sometimes have to accept making detours in order to find a new, promising transfer opportunity. The spreadsheet verification project, winner of an ERC Proof of Concept grant from the European Research Council, is proof of this. Launched in January 2018 by the Île-de-France regional authority, on Monday 15 October the 2018 Paris Region AI Challenge revealed the competition's four prize-winning start-ups. The company awarded first prize was TheraPanacea, created by researcher and professor Nikos Paragios, for its AI project applied to the healthcare sector and, more specifically, oncology.
Although he defines himself as a DIY-engineer, Adrien Taylor explores the field of mathematical optimisation and its potential applications with an open and curious eye. Portrait of this young Belgian, whose thesis has won many prizes and who is a post-doctoral researcher in the Sierra project team at the Inria Paris centre.
Born from a collaboration with the Potioc project team, the start-up Ullo is currently preparing its flight to Las Vegas for CES 2019 with the delegation from New Aquitaine. The Roche-based start-up, which is developing new therapeutic approaches for the care of cognitive disorders, will present Inner Garden, an interactive sensory sandbox.
L'Oréal - UNESCO Awards
Stéphanie Challita et Fanny Orlhac, deux chercheuses Inria comptent parmi les lauréates de la nouvelle édition des Bourses France L’Oréal-UNESCO « Pour les Femmes et la Science ». Ces bourses récompensent les travaux de recherche de jeunes scientifiques singulièrement talentueuses. En soutenant la place des femmes dans la recherche, et en mettant en avant les portraits de ces chercheuses, ce programme a aussi pour objectif d’inciter plus de jeunes filles à se tourner vers les sciences.
