François Sillion, Acting CEO

François Sillion was appointed acting CEO on January 22nd 2018. He was previously Deputy CEO for Science since 2014.
A former student of the French graduate school École Normale Supérieure, François Sillion has been Deputy CEO for Science at Inria since 2014. Holder of a doctoral thesis from Paris-Sud University and an authorisation to supervise research from Joseph Fourier-Grenoble 1 University, he has successively served as a researcher at Cornell University (USA), the CNRS (in Paris and Grenoble), and then Inria since 1998. He has been a visiting researcher at MIT (USA) and at Microsoft Research (USA), and a professor-lecturer at the École Polytechnique.
His research has focused on computer-generated image techniques: 3D models, expressive rendering, lighting simulation; display of very large volumes of data and data acquisition from real images. He has supervised 15 theses and published around 100 research articles on these subjects, as well as two reference works on lighting simulation and the digital modelling of material appearance. In 2009 he received the 'Outstanding Contribution Award' from the international association Eurographics.
At Inria, he founded and led the Inria project team ARTIS, and served as president of the projects committee at the Inria Rhône-Alpes research centre from 2000 to 2007, before managing this research centre from 2007 to 2014. As Inria's Deputy CEO for Science, he has notably developed support mechanisms for exploratory research projects and transversal and interdisciplinary programmes in support of the institute's scientific strategy.
