Alain Viari has been appointed Deputy CEO for Science at Inria on 1st February 2018.
Alain Viari has a PhD in Molecular Biophysics from Université Paris VI, related to mass spectrometry of nucleic acids. His professional experience includes ten years as a researcher at CNRS, during which he was Head of the Bioinformatics Team at the Institut Curie and then at Paris VI University, one of the first bioinformatics organisations in France. He joined Inria Grenoble in 1999, where he became Head of the Helix project-team, then Deputy Head of Science at Inria Grenoble Rhône-Alpes Research Centre, before going on to become assistant to the Deputy CEO for Science, responsible for life, health and environmental sciences.
His areas of scientific interest include algorithmics applied to biology and, in particular, understanding genome structure. His initial focus was on microbiology and bacterial genomics, but in recent years Alain has been interested in cancer genomics and is the Scientific Manager of the Bioinformatics for Oncology Platform at the Léon Bérard Centre in Lyon. With a keen interest in interdisciplinary dialogue, he has studied and published works on a variety of subjects, ranging from physical chemistry to oncology and from the algorithmics of words and graphs to infectiology and virology.
