Since its creation, the research centre has developed a policy of extremely close collaboration with the major institutions in the regions in which it is based, by setting up joint laboratories and teams.

The Gilles Kahn Prize 2015, awarded by the French Computer Science Society (SIF) and sponsored by the Academy of Sciences, has been won by Clément Maria for his doctoral thesis entitled, ‘Algorithms and Data Structures in Algorithmic Topology’, supervised by Jean-Daniel Boissonnat of the Geometrica project team, and based on research carried out at the Inria Sophia Antipolis – Méditerranée Research Centre.

Research work may lead to inventions and the development of new software which is distributed in 3 main ways:
- through a "free licence" based on one of the classic "open source" distribution licences
- through a "licence for evaluation", of limited duration, for the business's internal testing and experimentation purposes
- through a "patent licence", enabling the business to integrate the software in a product or market it.
Inria Saclay – ile de France has a substantial record of industrial collaboration and partnerships with major French and international companies.
The Inria Saclay Ile-de-France research centre is located on the campus of the École polytechnique in the Paris region.
