Inria researchers constantly work to help improve our understanding of the phenomena that impact on our planet, to predict future change and seek solutions. Medicine, biology, robotics and ecology are among the many fields of application in which digital science now has a key contribution to make. This is also true of the effort to reverse climate change, a fundamental challenge for the whole planet.

Various applications are encountered in the subsurface since it contains interesting natural resources: groundwater, fossil fuels or heat. The natural capacity of confinement of the underground is also used for waste storage.
The COP21 Solutions exhibition, running from 4 to 10 December 2015, is expected to attract nearly 50,000 visitors under the glass dome of the Grand Palais in Paris, to learn about real, accessible solutions for the development of a post-carbon world. Inria is one of the fifteen research organisations exhibiting together for the first time in a space showcasing climate change issues and researchers' commitment to action. Around twenty Inria researchers will be presenting their research results.
The members of the Inocs research team, Diego Cattaruzza, Maxime Ogier and Frédéric Semet, in collaboration with Nabil Absi and Dominique Feillet of the École des Mines de Saint-Etienne took first place in the scientific prize category of the 2016 ROADEF/EURO Challenge organized in cooperation with Air Liquide.
