Just ten years ago, Manuel Davy, co-founder of the Sequel team from the Inria Lille - Nord Europe research centre, launched his start-up: Vekia At the time the small company, specialised in machine learning, proposed consulting services to the major retail groups in the Lille region. Today, Vekia is developing a supply chain solution for stock management. It employs approximately 50 people, works with around 20 major retail groups and, in 2017, raised 12 million Euros in order to expand.
The start-up Hikob, created in 2011 at Inria, has been bought by TagMaster, the leading manufacturer of advanced RFID products and traffic sensors and of ANPR cameras for vehicle identification in traffic and rail solutions.
Ten PhD students and engineers from the Inria Lille - Nord Europe centre took part in the Belgo-French Start-up Weekend which took place from 14-16 September 2018 at the CCI Grand Lille. This edition of the Start-up Weekend furthers Franco-Belgian relations by welcoming participants, jury members and companies from France and Belgium. A wonderful collaboration to mark our relationship with Belgium. Students from École Centrale Lille and the EDHEC business school were also present.
Inria supports the creation of technological start-ups using the results of its research. The project owners, researchers or engineers are world-class in their fields; however transforming these scientists into business creators is a complex process. In order for the project owners to be better prepared and find their way more quickly, Inria and emlyon business school have joined forces; they are offering a tailor-made action programme, the aim of which is to assist seven start-up projects during the first year, before reaching an annual rate of 20 to 30 projects over three years.
The Inria Lille - Nord Europe centre's Technology Transfer, Innovation and Partnerships department (STIP) encourages the creation of start-ups by raising awareness among, and providing support to, scientists wishing to venture into entrepreneurship. Laurie Barbarin has been exclusively in charge of this mission since October 2017. Lille is the first Inria centre to have set up a post dedicated to this support.
