Education - MOOCs
This morning, the French Minister of Higher Education and Research, Geneviève Fioraso, presented the digital agenda for higher education over the next five years. It includes an iconic project for education and training, the France Digital University, and the launch of France’s first massive open online course (MOOC) platform, in which Inria is involved.
Inria researchers regularly meet with teachers, bringing the world of computer science and mathematics research closer to that of secondary education. Teachers who wish to be are thus kept up to date with the latest research news and results and the associated social issues.
Meetings take place several times a year - during meetings of mathematics departments, for instance. Particular attention is paid to young teachers.
More than 70 meetings have been organised in recent years.
Inria's researchers have met over 700 pupils at the lectures they have given at secondary schools or during the Mathematical Olympiad awards ceremony or the training courses held as part of the "Pépinière de mathématiques".
It is important to bring people together and spread scientific awareness whenever possible. This is why Inria's two research centres in the Ile-de-France region (Paris-Rocquencourt and Saclay - Ile-de-France) are participating jointly in the "Culture et jeux mathématiques" show and the Fête de la Science, which take place yearly in May and October respectively.
This international contest was set up to promote computing and digital science to as wide an audience of young people as possible, through fun activities such as solving riddles, taking part in challenges and playing logic games. Unlike an introduction to computer programming, the contest aims to show young boys and girls that computing is a science as well as a technology.
On 4th November, children from Bordeaux and Nancy, with support from the Inria research centres, will participate in the R2T2 international mission, initiated by Professor Francesco Mondada from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Their task: to use their computer skills here on Earth to program robots to repair the generator of Mars Base R45, which has been damaged by a meteorite.
