Bernard Espiau, Deputy Scientific Director

Bernard Espiau has been appointed Deputy scientific director with the Technological development department in charge of the field of "Applied mathematics, computing, and simulation". He devotes a portion of his working activity to duties including research coordination, prospecting, and scientific leadership on one or more research topics in his field of expertise. He is also in charge of a cross-disciplinary mission related to Inria's national or international actions and, in this role, reports to the research director.

Laparoscopic surgery training simulator

Digital Trainers -

"An ethical aim should be a priority : Never on the patient for thefirst time".

This sentence is extracted from a January 2012 report of the French National Authority for Health focused on the current medical staff training stakes. However, real time simulation of a full surgical operation remains a challenge with still many scientific issues to overcome.

As part of the Passport european project, we've developped a software that implements a virtual patient simulation. An haptic interface with force feedback allows real time interactions improved by the  actual perception of contacts with the simulated organs.

Simulation Electrocardiology

Research team : CARMEN -

Cardiac electrophysiology is a complex science that studies the organization of cardiac electrical phenomena from the molecular scale up to the scale of the body. Mathematical modeling and numerical simulations are used to built experimental tools that guide our understanding of cardiac electrical dysfunction. We will show some simulations that have an impact on medical science.

Knowledge-based 3D anatomical modeling using MyCF

Research team : IMAGINE -

The MyCF software eases the creation of 3D anatomical models for visualization and mechanical simulation. As input, the user provides a list of anatomical entities or functions to simulate, using keywords or navigating in reference 3D model. As output, she gets a 3D model ready to visualize, or to simulate using the SOFA open-sourcesimulation library. The model can be based on a reference geometry, or on the assembly of patient-specific models provided by the user.

Computer-Aided Design of nanosystems

Research team : NANO-D -

Presentation of SAMSON (Software for Adaptive Modeling and Simulation Of Nanosystems). SAMSON is a software platform for modeling and simulating nanosystems, either natural or artificial. SAMSON integrates algorithms developed by the NANO-D team at INRIA and its collaborators. The specificity of SAMSON consists in the integration of simulation methods during the modeling phase: adaptive, interactive simulation algorithms provide immediate feedback on the impact of modeling choices.
