The model
The laws governing flows in porous media have been known since Henry Darcy's 1857 treatise on the Public Fountains of the City of Dijon. However, we are still unable to predict the lifespan of an aquifer or, worse still, to qualify a storage site, particularly when intended for nuclear waste or CO2.
Could Darcy's law be obsolete as far as underground environments are concerned? Are flow rates faster or slower than those predicted by Darcy? Does geology speed up or slow down the flow rate? Does our lack of understanding of the geological environment lead us to underestimate flow rates and result in naive optimism?

Séminaire Modélisation et Calcul Scientifique
The seminar has as vocation to present the latest advances in modeling and scientific calculation and to interconnect the academic and industrial communities of this domain. There are usually two talks, the first one rather theoretical and the second one rather applicational. Each lecture is supposed to have an explicative part, accessible by a general audience, and a specialized part with illustrative numerical results. Each talk is planned for 35 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of questions.

Damien Woods ( TAPDANCE) : Building computers out of DNA
Our team designs and builds molecular computers consisting of synthetic DNA strands that bump into each other and interact to run algorithms like sorting numbers, simulating Turing machines or other
complicated nanoscale tasks. These DNA computers consist of DNA strands in water with a pinch of salt, and do not need poorly-understood biological machinery like cells and proteins.
