The Collège de France and Inria establish a chair in "Computing and Computational Sciences"

10/11/2009

Computing and computational science, unlike quantum physics or molecular chemistry, are notions with which the general public has become familiar given the place occupied by new technology in our daily lives. But there is a huge risk of confusing computer science with the use made of it. On the one hand, the objects that have become commonplace, technical applications used every day (podcasts, GPS, etc.), and on the other, an original and complex science that needs urgent recognition as such.
Recognising computer science as a separate science to improve how it is taught

Turn Europe into the global leader in ICT innovation - this is the mission for the new Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) just selected in tough competition by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The EIT is a new organisation recently launched by the EU targeting European competitiveness through better integration across the so-called “knowledge triangle” of higher education, research and innovation. By highlighting the Future Information Society, the EIT recognizes the fact that 80 % of new developments in the key economic sectors of Europe are based on ICT.

The CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) ethics committee and an Inria commission recommend the creation of an ethics committee covering research into computational science and technology

12/01/2010

The CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and Inria are making two reports public, namely "In favour of ethics covering research into information and communication science and technology" written by the CNRS ethics committee (known as COMETS), and "Report on forming an ethics committee covering research into computational science and technology" drafted by a commission set up by Inria. At the heart of our societies' development, computational science and technology and the research they generate really do raise fundamental ethical issues that both organisations wished to investigate.  Emphasising the many fields affected by such issues, and describing the current situation in other disciplines and abroad, both reports particularly agree on the need to create an ethics committee covering research into computational science and technology without delay.
