Conférence : Joseph Fourier

Joseph Fourier was born 250 years ago. Elected a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1817, he is one of the greatest names in mathematics and physics of the nineteenth century. In his famous treatise "Théorie analytique de la chaleur" published in 1822, he developed his theory of the propagation of heat, for which he invented new mathematical tools which would later find many applications, particularly in signal theory.

Today more than ever, Fourier's work remains relevant. Wavelet theory, which can be seen as a generalization of Fourier analysis, plays a fundamental role in the applications of mathematics to image coding, processing and compression.

An exceptional scientist but also a great servant of the State engaged in public life, notably as Prefect of Isère, Fourier remains an astonishingly modern scientist.
