RIOT: an open source operating system for the Internet of Things

At the occasion of CeBIT (the largest computer trade show in the world, held from March 10th to 14th in Hanover, Germany), Emmanuel Baccelli, researcher at Inria and invited professor at the Freie Universität in Berlin, will present the RIOT operating system, which has been specially designed for the Internet of Things.

RIOT - The Friendly Operating System for the Internet of Things

RIOT is a nano operating system for the Internet of Things. While requiring as low as 1,5kB of RAM and 5kB or ROM, RIOT offers real time and energy efficiency capabilities, as well as a single API (partially POSIX compliant) across heterogeneous 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit low-hardware. This API is developer-friendly in that it enables multi-threading, standard C and C++ application programming and the use of standard debugging tools (which was not possible so far for embedded programming). On top of this, RIOT includes several network stacks, such as a standard IPv6/6LoWPAN stack and a content-centric network (CCN) stack. RIOT will be demonstrated powering heterogeneous IoT hardware based on low-power microcontrollers and radio transceivers, in a home automation scenario interconnecting devices running a simple application and either standard IPv6/6LoWPAN protocols, or CCN (or dual stack).

The RIOT operating system will be demonstrated on devices based on small memory, low-power microcontrollers and radio transceivers. RIOT will enable interoperation of heterogeneous IoT hardware using the latest IETF/IRTF protocols (including 6TiSCH, 6LoWPAN/IPv6) and content-centric networking.

ScalAgent has recently designed JoramMQ Entreprise, a MOM which complies with the various standards of the field (JMS, AMQP, MQTT) and which is particularly fit for the IoT world. An extensive performance analysis highlights its astonishing scalability against popular alternatives.

JoramMQ derives from JORAM, the MOM distributed by the OW2 Consortium. JORAM is an open source alternative to IBM WebSphere MQ, distributed since 2001.

End-to-end IoT communication with FIT IoT-LAB

Project team Infine (Saclay - Île-de-France) -

This demonstration will be based on both IoT-LAB and RIOT. It will show how to use IoT-LAB for running experiments that use, as communication protocol, the latest standards and/or some latest research protocols. It will include an end-to-end application (upstream, sensor data retrieval, or downstream, remote nodes reprogrammation).
