We will try to show in this intervention that ethical questioning, like the questioning on the security of computer systems, is also a fertile source of new scientific and technical questions. For example, the questioning of privacy has given rise to numerous studies on the anonymization of data, the electronic voting project has led to the design of voting protocols, but also to the study of their limits. Similarly, questions relating to the fairness of algorithms, such as the post-bac admission algorithm, or that of the justification of a judgment or decision, lead to new problems that we do not yet know how to solve.

Since 2011, Inria has had an ad hoc body to assess the legal and ethical issues confronting staff involved in Inria missions. The Operational Committee for the Evaluation of Legal and Ethical Risks (Coerle) has a number of roles. It examines and issues an opinion on the research and experiments conducted at Inria, and on the software, knowledge and data it publishes. It approves the ethical aspects of research projects and the publication of their findings. It is also the authority on the scientific integrity of the output of Inria and its staff.
Coerle operates at various levels: it advises project-teams and helps them cover their potential ethical and legal risks. When a matter is referred to Coerle, the committee examines the project then issues a detailed opinion, which might concern experiments or the publication of software, knowledge or data.
