"Our lives in the age of big data"
Olivier Grisel, a software engineer in the Parietal project team from Inria Saclay – Île-de-France research centre, took part in the French radio programme "La tête au carré" on France Inter on the topic of "Our lives in the age of big data".
The Parietal team does research on the human brain, using predictive models to better understand how it works and anticipate its behaviour.
These predictive algorithms are used in science but have become part of our daily lives, as they are used by many web start-ups who adapt them to predict buying behaviour in users, recommend products and detect trends and abusive behaviour (e.g. scams, spam, etc.).
"What is an algorithm? How are these new calculation techniques revolutionizing our society? Can they improve our lives? What are the dangers of algorithms? How can we regain control over them?"
Olivier Grisel and the sociologist Dominique Cardon attempted to answer these questions during the programme presented by Mathieu Vidard on Tuesday 5 January 2016.
