Prize and Award
Mikel Landajuela Larma (Reo): awarded the SMAI-GAMNI prize
Each year, the SMAI-GAMNI rewards the best French thesis in digital methods for mechanics and the engineering sciences. The French Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics (SMAI) has awarded the 2017 thesis prize to a former PhD student with Reo, Mikel Landajuela Larma. Meeting with this young prizewinning researcher.
Can you tell us about your career?
I studied mathematics at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao. After spending a year at the University of Utrecht, in 2012 I took part in the Inria Paris-Rocquencourt centre's PhD student recruitment campaign. I won this competitive exam with a project led by the researcher Miguel Fernandez, from the Reo project team - he was my thesis supervisor for three years.
I am currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Italian technical university Politecnico di Milano.
You are the winner of the SMAI-GAMNI 2017 thesis prize. What does this award represent for you?
This award is recognition of the scientific quality of the manuscript and a reward for all of the work invested during the thesis. It is therefore a source of great pride and satisfaction. It is also recognition of the work of my thesis supervisor and, in general, the quality of the theses prepared within the Reo project team.
What are your plans for the future?
I am currently working on a project linked to cardiac electromechanics involving researchers from the Politecnico di Milan and the EPFL (Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne). The aim is to improve the modelling of electrical propagation in the heart in order to better understand the role it plays in the heart's overall activity.
How was your experience at Inria? What advice would you give to other researchers who might wish to approach Inria in order to do their thesis?
My experience as a PhD student at Inria was a very positive one. Inria provides PhD students with a large capacity of technical and human resources with a high degree of professionalism and excellence. Inria is an ideal place to do a high-level thesis, and I would recommend it without any hesitation.
