First place in the scientific prize category of the 2016 ROADEF/EURO Challenge

The members of the Inocs research team, Diego Cattaruzza, Maxime Ogier and Frédéric Semet, in collaboration with Nabil Absi and Dominique Feillet of the École des Mines de Saint-Etienne took first place in the scientific prize category of the 2016 ROADEF/EURO Challenge organized in cooperation with Air Liquide. The ceremony was held on February 23, 2017 at the ROADEF conference in Metz.

The members of the Inocs research team, Diego Cattaruzza, Maxime Ogier and Frédéric Semet, in collaboration with Nabil Absi and Dominique Feillet of the École des Mines de Saint-Etienne took first place in the scientific prize category of the 2016 ROADEF/EURO Challenge organized in cooperation with Air Liquide. The ceremony was held on February 23, 2017 at the ROADEF conference in Metz.

The 2016 ROADEF/EURO Challenge, jointly sponsored by the French (ROADEF) and European (EURO) divisions of the Operational Research and Decision Support Society in cooperation with Air Liquide, consisted of studying a problem involving gas delivery with a fleet of trucks while managing customer inventory.  The Inventory Routing Problem is well known in the operational research community. 

The challenge concerned handling an optimization problem that included a large number of practical constraints (customer accessibility, assigning drivers to trucks and minimal delivery quantities) for large quantities (30-day planning horizon with hundreds of customers to be supplied). Due to the structure of the underlying mathematical model, the proposed problem is typical of optimization problems handled by the Inocs team of the Inria Lille – Nord Europe research center.

The work is original because it solves the problem using a heuristic method based on an exact branch, cut and price approach, which is usually used to solve simpler problems with much smaller quantities. The method developed by Inocs could also easily be adapted to new variants of the problem. This is very important in industry where new technologies, new management rules and new legislation frequently involve modifying or adding constraints to the problem.
