International Congress of Mathematicians
The International Congress of Mathematicians is the mathematics community's biggest event. Held every four years, it will take place in Korea under the aegis of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). A number of prestigious medals and prizes will be awarded at the event: the Fields Medal, the Chern Medal, the Nevanlinna Prize and the Gauss Prize.
- Date : 13/08/2014 to 21/08/2014
- Place : Seoul, Korea
The Bacchus research team from the Inria Bordeaux – Sud-Ouest Centre specialises in parallel tools for the simulation of essentially hyperbolic problems. Remi Abgrall, a researcher in the team, will present his work on new algorithm developments in the mechanics of compressible continuous media.
The potential applications are very varied, from "simple" fluids such as air (air flows around aeroplanes or rockets or inside engines), to more complex fluids, such as the flows involved in oil pipelines (where a difficulty arises due to the fact that oil and water do not mix, even on a very small scale). There are also applications for compressible solids (impacts of dusts on satellites). One of the characteristics of this work is its search for "universal" methods that can work both for materials that move very quickly and for those that move very slowly.
Denis Talay, head of the Tosca research team at the Sophia Antipolis – Méditerranée Centre, will be one of the guest speakers at the event.
