Modelling and Optimisation of the Dynamics of Ecosystems with MICro-organisme

Team presentation

The research activities of MODEMIC focus on modelling and simulating of natural or reconstituted microbial ecosystems, over several time and space scales, as well as various diversity levels. The main objectives of the project are:
  • a better understanding of microbial ecology, especially its functions (degradation, fermentation, sequestration...), its biodiversity and its role in preserving the environment (quality of water resources, soil fertility...)
  • new decision-making tools for managing and improving bioprocesses (decontamination, green chemistry...)
Applications are conducted with close collaborations with biologists, microbiologists and agronomists.

Research themes

  • Modelling and simulating microbial ecosystems:
    • macroscopic approach
    • microscopic approach
    • marriage of both approaches
  • Interpreting and analyzing experimental observations:
    • assessment of community structures
    • characterization of the interactions
    • observation of spatial structures
  • Controlling and optimizing bioprocesses:
    • identification, software sensors and filtering
    • bioprocess stabilization
    • optimal control of bioreactors
    • plant design and optimization
