Marie Doumic-Jauffret: modelling amyloidosis
Marie Doumic-Jauffret is one of 4 Inria candidates selected in the young researcher category for the ERC European call for projects 2012. Her project, called Skipper, aims to improve understanding of amyloidosis, a group of diseases that includes prions and Alzheimer’s, in order to help biologists identify therapeutic solutions.

Ivan Laptev: Advancing Computer Vision
Ivan Laptev is one of the four INRIA candidates selected for a European Research Council (ERC) grant in the young researchers category 2012. His subject, “Computer Vision”, aims to mimic the human visual system thanks to algorithms that analyse motion, detect events and recognise objects in video sequences. He explains his work to us in more detail and outlines some potential applications.

Computer science offers deeper understanding of sound
Philippe Manoury, born in Tulle (in the French department of Corrèze) in 1952, is Professor of Music at the University of San Diego in California. He has been named Best Composer of the Year at the 2012 French Victoires de la Musique Classique for his opera La nuit de Gutenburg, composed using Antescofo software. This tool was developed by Arshia Cont, a researcher at Inria and Ircam.

Mazyar Mirrahimi: Towards quantum systems engineering
Mazyar Mirrahimi of the Sisyphe team, in collaboration with the group led by Serge Haroche and Jean-Michel Raimond of the ENS and Pierre Rouchon of the Ecole des Mines de Paris, recently co-wrote an article published in Nature which has garnered some attention. The sudden disappearance of a scientific figure
Inria would like to pay a heartfelt tribute to Philippe Flajolet, an eminent figure in computer science, who suddenly passed away yesterday. Philippe Flajolet revolutionised the analysis of algorithms and contributed to the international reputation of our institute, where he worked for nearly 40 years.

Jean Ponce: from photo to video
A renowned specialist in shape recognition in photos, Jean Ponce, professor at France's École Normale Supérieure, moved into the field of video a few years ago. To support his work he recently received an ERC advanced grant. His goal is to automatically analyse and process films no matter what sequences or camera movements they contain, in order to archive, modify or restore them. This work is of particular interest to video effects designers.

Karthik Bhargavan: proving the safety of web applications
The medical saying "prevention is better than cure" also applies to computers. Karthik Bhargavan, a young researcher from the MOSCOVA team, recently received an ERC grant to continue his work on ensuring the safety of services such as personal and sensitive data management. This work is both theoretical and highly applied, and is carried out at the Inria and Microsoft Research joint laboratory. We went to meet this researcher.
