Productive partnership for high performance computing

As the fifth workshop of the Inria-Urbana-Champaign joint lab (Joint Laboratory on Petascale Computing-JLPC) came to an end in Grenoble, Franck Cappello, its co-director, took stock of the activities of this institution dedicated to high-performance computing. Two years after its creation, it was now time to review its most emblematic results and to present its current research on climate and the international G8 Exascale project, with which the joint laboratory is associated.

Matthieu Dorier winner 2011 ACM-SRC

Matthieu Dorier received the second prize at the ACM Student Research Competition, held in conjunction with the International Conference on Supercomputing, in Tucson (Arizona), from 1st to 3rd June, 2011. He was awarded this prize while doing a Masters internship at the Joint Laboratory for Petascale Computing-JLPC, a joint laboratory set up by Inria and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Thom Dunning: a successful collaboration

On June the 27th, The Joint Laboratory for Petascale Computing (JLPC), formed by the University of Illinois and Inria, held its fifth workshop in Grenoble. Thom Dunning, director of the Institute for Advanced Computing Applications and Technologies and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois, explains why this collaboration is a success.

Some trends and challenges for the 2.0 years

According to the Inria/TNS Sofres survey conducted this year, nearly one French person in two declared they could not do without social networks. Such interest on its own proves what a success the social web is, although success is not without an increase in private data now present in cyberspace. A thorough grasp of interaction tools and controlling one’s web image are becoming major challenges for tomorrow’s web, both for individuals and companies… as well as a challenge for researchers developing social web management tools.

The "Internships" programme

Each year, Inria welcomes students from all over the world for a research training experience through the Internships programme. Undergraduate, masters or PhD students come and spend a few months in an Inria research team. Two students, Michail Zervos and Nadia Khalfa, talk about their successful experience and offer advice to all those who may be interested in the Internships programme.

From 14 till 16 December 2011 Inria co-organizes a conference dedicated to the work and to the memory of Philippe Flajolet, died suddenly on March 22nd, 2011. In this conference, we wish to pay homage to the man as well as the multi-faceted mathematician and computer-scientist.This conference will also help more people understand his rich and varied work, through talks aimed at a large audience.

W3C chooses Inria to open its France office

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is opening an office in France, to be hosted by Inria, in order to consolidate its relations with industry and with other participants in the French ecosystem. The new office is to develop and coordinate the community of French W3C members.

ALMA, the world’s largest radio telescope project

Inria and ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Array), alongside the CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, the French National Academy for Arts and Crafts), are working together to design the man-machine interfaces that will control the revolutionary radio-telescope currently being built in the Atacama desert, to the north of Chile.

Dale Miller: “Making proof universal”

As the beneficiary of an ERC Advanced Grant for experienced researchers, Dale Miller has embarked on the difficult path of establishing proof. His aim? In this field, which is highly abstract but which has a definite impact on the real world, he wishes to standardise proof systems and issue certificates for such systems in order to promote greater confidence in them.

Technology Transfer at Inria

Strategic partnerships with large industrial players

The strategic partnerships that Inria establishes are long-term bilateral partnerships with large industrial groups, formalized in a framework agreement. A research program is developed jointly by Inria and its partner based on the industrial player’s proposed priority topics. Research projects, fitting into this program, are then developed jointly by Inria’s teams and the partner. In addition, a steering committee and a scientific committee ensure that the collaboration is consistent and runs smoothly.

Twelve positions in host on secondment to be filled

Are you an engineer? A teacher in the state education system? A research-lecturer? A senior civil servant? Join us! From 08 February to 30 April 2012, Inria is running its 2012 host secondment campaign.

Application conditions

Choose a field and the Inria research team that you would like to join.
Contact the team manager to find out what host opportunities are available.

After obtaining the team manager's approval, complete an application file and submit it to the human resources department in .pdf format.

This file should contain the following documents:

A detailed curriculum vitae, containing a list of your publications
A description of the work programme
Notification from the manager of the host team concerned
Notification from the director of the Inria research centre concerned
The agreement of your employer
Recommandations letters. The referees can send in confidence their letter to the following adress detachement_2012@inria.fr
