Bertrand Braunschweig, Director of the Inria Rennes - Bretagne Atlantique research centre

Bertrand Braunschweig has been appointed head of the Inria Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique centre, a position which he took up from 1 October 2011. Bertrand is a graduate of the ENSIIE IT engineering school, and holds a PhD from the Paris-Dauphine university as well as a habilitation to advise doctoral theses from the Paris VI university.

Having worked in the oil industry as a researcher in system dynamics and artificial intelligence, he went on to join the French Petroleum Institute (IFP), where he was responsible for research into AI as part of the Technology, IT and Applied Mathematics Division.

He then spent the next ten years or so managing a number of European and international projects related to defining the CAPE-OPEN interoperability standard for process modeling and simulation, and this work earned him the very first “CAPE recent achievement award” presented by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering, in 2006.

Bertrand was Chairman of the French Artificial Intelligence Association (AFIA) for four years, as well as Chairman of the French Association for Information Science and Technologies (ASTI) from 2006 to the beginning of 2008. He has been actively involved in the National Network for Software Technologies (RNTL) since its creation, as coordinator of area 2, “Information and Knowledge Networks”, as well as of a number of RNTL platforms.

He joined the French National Research Agency (ANR) as manager of various research programmes in 2006, and has been head of the ICST department since January 2009. He is an expert with the European Commission, and has published over one hundred articles and papers, and five books.
