Bernard Espiau has been appointed Deputy scientific director with the Technological development department in charge of the field of "Applied mathematics, computing, and simulation". He devotes a portion of his working activity to duties including research coordination, prospecting, and scientific leadership on one or more research topics in his field of expertise. He is also in charge of a cross-disciplinary mission related to Inria's national or international actions and, in this role, reports to the research director.

Bernard Espiau, research director at Inria, has primarily focused his work in the field of robotics, tending towards "automation": design, modelling, control, command with sensors, real-time architectures with, among other things, application to locomotion. He was director of ISIA (Ecole des Mines de Paris, Sophia Antipolis) from 1988 to 1992, then leader of the BIP project (bipedal robot) in Grenoble, then director of the Grenoble centre from 2000 to 2005. He is currently the Deputy scientific director in charge of "Applied mathematics, computing, and simulation" and is interested in signal processing for the analysis and control of movement from embedded sensor networks.
