Numerically computing the growth of a tumour

We present a decision-making aid for oncologists. Based on a series of medical images (MRI, scans), this method can be used to build a personalised mathematical model of the patient, which takes into account the type of tissues affected (lung, brain, etc.), the particular type of tumour and some parameters specific to the patient. The model can be used to predict changes in the location, size and shape of the tumour over time. It can also be used to predict the effect of the treatments envisaged.

IGNSPlanner, a system providing assistance in preparations for neurosurgery

'IGNSPlanner' allows neurosurgeons to prepare for operations using several MRI techniques. The application manages a database of surgery schedules, can be integrated in a hospital information system, processes images and displays the information extracted from them (lesions, cortical grooves, fibres, brain activation areas) in a 3D image. It helps the neurosurgeon to plan his/her operation and anticipate the area to be removed, those that must be avoided and the trajectory that must be followed.

Visual programming of personal assistance applications

The assistance provided to people with disabilities relies greatly on the knowledge of the social workers providing it. Today, increasingly mobile and interconnected technologies can offer additional support. The Pantagruel approach offers a graphical tool which can be used to create orchestration applications for communicating devices. Pantagruel aims to combine the adaptability required to create personal assistance applications with the user-friendliness needed to allow caregivers to create and adapt applications.

Simulation of organ movements caused by breathing

We present a simulation of respiratory movements based on a physiological and anatomical study. The objective is for this simulation technology to be used in surgery simulators or as treatment aids. The movement of the thorax is modelled using kinematic laws applied to each rib. The movement of the diaphragm consists of a translation of the tendons and a contraction/relaxation of the muscles. The behaviour of the soft organs is modelled using the Chainmail algorithm.

NeuroLog: a system for sharing neuroimaging data and processing tools

This system, designed as part of the French National Research Agency (ANR) Neurolog project, aims to support multi-centric research work in the field of neuroimaging. The system allows the various databases located at different sites in Paris, Rennes, Nice and Grenoble to be pooled, and provides access to the images referenced in these databases. The system also allows users to process these images, either using local processing resources or on the EGEE computing grid, and to view the results.

Discovering and representing healthcare options using health information systems

We present a system based on data mining methods, designed for discovering and viewing the behaviour of patients in the healthcare system. This application enables decision-makers and health professionals to adapt and plan their healthcare offer based on data collected systematically by health information systems, which are often very rich and not used to their full potential.

Simulation and planning of medical procedures

SOFA (Simulation Open Framework Architecture) is an international open-source platform project devoted essentially to real-time simulation, particularly for medical applications. Led by Inria, the project incorporates numerous innovative research results. Downloaded more than 70,000 times, SOFA is used as much in industry projects as by academic partners and is one of the leading tools for physical simulation.

Portable and secure medical and welfare records

A personal data server embedded in a new-generation smartcard with a large storage capacity (GB). The server can be used to store a full set of medical records, interact using a dedicated application (even in offline mode), and synchronise with a central server, with strong safeguards to ensure confidentiality. This technology is being trialled in the Yvelines department with a view to creating portable and secure medical records which facilitate coordination of treatment for dependent persons.

Numerical modelling of the heart

CardioSense3D offers numerical models of the cardiac function (electrophysiology, mechanics, blood flows) in order to improve planning of cardiac therapies and assist in the interpretation of cardiac images and signals. These models are personalised. That is to say, they are adapted to the anatomy and physiology of a given patient in order to supply clinical information specific to this patient.

SYNEIKA ONE: Neuronavigation for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

In the absence of a precise means of locating the therapeutic target, doctors using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation use approximate methods to target their treatment. The SYNEIKA ONE neuronavigator uses an MRI of the patient to propose reliable, repeatable personalised treatment. The fact that the data is prepared automatically makes the SYNEIKA ONE neuronavigator a tool suitable for daily therapeutic use in a hospital environment.
