Social networks
Seminar: “Social networks: from structures to policy”
© Inria Mistral Project-Team
This seminar is intended to review social networks from an inter-disciplinary point of view, so as to gain a better appreciation of the range of issues raised by this domain in methodological, scientific and policy terms. What is the real structure of these networks? How does such knowledge affect sociology? What are its policy consequences? What kind of world is emerging as a result of this digital frenzy?
- Date : 12/12/2011 to 13/12/2011
- Place : La Rotonde, INSA Lyon, campus de la Doua, Villeurbanne
- Organisers : Eric Fleury, Pablo Jensen, JPh Magué et JM Salaün
Social networks are a major subject for sociologists. As early as in 1934, J.-L. Moreno studied networks of friends within a group of girls who ran away from school in order to improve understanding as to why they had done so, and considered a form of socio-metrics similar to the ‘social atoms’ of physics. This type of study has blossomed since the 1990s thanks to the huge amount of data available on social systems.
Guest speakers at the “Social networks: from structures to policy” seminar are global leading lights in their respective fields, which together cover various disciplines such as sociology, information technology, anthropology, philosophy, physics and mathematics, etc.: Bruno Latour, David Stark, Alain Barrat, Vincent Blondel, Gianluca Manzo, Pierre Mercklé
