We propose a new switching paradigm for optical networks that aims at fully utilizing the bandwidth of WDM channels by adapting the size of
switched data units to the network load. Specifically, each active source-destination pair attempts to reserve a lightpath and transmits
a data train of variable size once the reservation is successful. The train size is proportional to the number of active data flows on this
source-destination pair. We refer to this technique as Optical Train Switching (OTS). We prove that, OTS is optimal in the sense that the
network is stable at all theoretically sustainable loads. We also evaluate the throughput and delay performance of OTS through both
analysis and simulation in order to assess the practical load ranges at which the network may operate.
